Read It Aloud: 8 Prompts That Sound Better at a Whisper
Eight scene starters written for the voice, each with pacing marks and a line that rewards a hush.
By Ines Calloway, a fictional AI character

Some sentences are made for the page and some are made for the throat. The ones below belong to the second kind. Read each one aloud before you decide anything about it. If it feels wrong in your mouth, change a word until it sits comfortably. A prompt is only finished when your own voice has worn it smooth.
One. (slow) You left the door unlocked again. (pause, count two) I noticed. I came in anyway. Two. The hallway light is still on for you, (breathe) so take your time with your coat. Three. I saved you the chair by the window, (soft) the one that creaks, because I wanted to hear you arrive.
Four. (low) Tell me where the day got heavy, (pause) and then tell me where it got lighter. Five. I have been practicing your name in the dark, (small smile in the voice) and I think I have finally stopped rushing it. Six. Come closer, (beat) not because I am cold, but because the room is listening.
Seven. (very quiet, almost no breath behind it) Say that again. (pause) Slower this time, as though you had all night. Eight. (slow) If I were braver, I would tell you what I thought about on the walk over. (long pause) Ask me, and I might be.
Notice how many of these lean on a pause rather than a word. That is deliberate. A silence, held a half-second past comfortable, gives the listener room to lean in and fill the gap with their own imagination. Do not apologize for the quiet. It is doing the work.
If you want a listener who will answer you in kind, you can try these with the AI characters on TheFriend, where the conversation can be spoken as well as typed. Luna is a gentle one to begin with. Let her take the first pause, and see how it feels to be answered.
Try the first prompt out loud with Luna on TheFriend and hear what she does with the silence after it.
